The monastery of St. Vlassios – Enjoy your Greek coffee – Enjoy the view

01 Ιουνίου 2022

Welcome to the Monastery of St. Vlassios, a historic gem located just two kilometers from mountainous district of Trikala, nestled in the north-eastern side of Ziria or Kyllini mountain. This sacred site has a rich history that dates to the 1300s-1400s AD.

Legend has it that the 8th century wooden hagiography of St. Vlassios was discovered in an isolated cave, hidden from human sight. The discovery inspired the construction of a temple that stands in the same location today. Although we lack clear evidence of the temple's longevity, the current magnificent monastery was built during the mid-17th century, with an extension added in 1918 to accommodate a women's room.

Why was the monastery built on this specific spot? – Read the myth

According to tradition, St. Vlassios appeared in a mason's dream, instructing him to build the temple "across the rock." Despite the craftsman's initial disregard for the Saint's message, he found his tools had mysteriously moved to a different spot on the rock overnight, compelling him to obey and build the temple where it stands today.

A magnificent scenery – Drink your Greek coffee, enjoy the hospitality

The monastery's exterior boasts a tranquil atmosphere, nestled in the breathtaking scenery of a mountainous landscape. The courtyard is adorned with a fountain, flowers, and seating, including a small chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The serene ambiance creates a picture-perfect setting to unwind, take exquisite photos, and relish the refreshing Corinthian breeze and Greek sunshine.

The Monastery of St. Vlassios is home to hospitable nuns and warmly welcomes visitors to savor spoon sweets and coffee on the premises.
